Argent architects
have produced a concept design to respond to the Local Development
Plan: Candidate Sites. The Major aspirations are to provide quality
housing of high amenity that is sustainable and at a price that
local people can afford. Community, vitality, access to work, school
and local services are all highlighted along with a particular concern
regarding the outmigration of young adults.
A close look at the Candidate Sites
reveals the reality of our planning process. Sites are randomly
offered up by owners and there is little evidence of a prior initial
weighting of prospective development sites in terms of landscape,
topography and orientation. No doubt this appraisal will come at
a later stage but by then some of the most suitable sites will have
been missed. This study at LLwynon, Stepaside seeks to respond to
major LDP aspirations and is offered as a model to assist the appraisal
of existing Candidate Sites. |

Cardigan
Argent architects
produced these offices near Cardigan, Ceredigion. This innovative
eco-friendly new build project has just recieved detailed planning
permission for new offices in open countryside.
The building form is of a Dutch
Barn with a smaller milking parlour at right angles . This is ideal
for its use, offering a grand galleried work space, with ancillary
accommodation in the milking parlour.
It is a ground breaking project
in that it succeeds mainly due to careful contextual design and
patient negotiation with Ceredigion County Council. |

Saundersfoot / Pembroke
Argent architects
produced these eco-friendly house types in both Saundersfoot
and Pembroke.
The simple barn like forms accommodate
the houses and garages and to fit appropriately into the rural setting
(think one and a half storey hay barn and single storey cow shed
or tractor shed so often found in or on the edge of local villages
and hamlets). The private / garden side with the larger openings
is well screened from general view. These openings serve to maximise
solar gain and to create a strong relationship between house and
garden.
SUSTAINABILITY:
The buildings have an efficient
and compact building form - small scale and low impact. Environmentally
friendly features include rainwater harvesting, solar panels, timber
from sustainably managed sources, and lime plaster.
Both projects have obtained detailed
planning permission from Pembrokeshire County Council and the Pembrokeshire
Coast National Park Authority.
